Carson, Carson, Carson. What are you thinking?

Please make sense once. Just once.

ICMYI: Mint Press News (9/28/2015) – Ben Carson Considers Religion As Probable Cause For Searches

And if you can’t make sense, would you at least leave our 4th amendment rights alone?

Seriously, the irony is rich with this one.

““What we should be talking about is Islam and the tenets of Islam and where do they come from? They come from Sharia. They come from the Koran,” he told host Martha Raddatz. “They come from, you know, the life works and examples of Muhammad. They come from the fatwas, which is the writings of scholars. You know, and if you go back and you look at — what I would like for somebody to show me is an improved Islamic text that opposes Sharia.”

“If you can show me that, I will begin to alter my thinking on this,” he said. “But, right now, when you have something that is against the rights of women, against the rights of gays, subjugates other religions and a host of things that are not compatible with our Constitution, why in fact would you take that chance?””

a) Maybe he should focus more on the improved Old Testament text that teaches love. I think that one was cleverly called the New Testament. Maybe he missed it or he’s waiting for the sequel for even more clarification?

b) That second paragraph up there, what? Is he completely unaware of which party he’s trying to win the nomination from? Why, indeed, Benny? Why, indeed?

A belated lesson for Ted Cruz on speaking for the people

It helps when more people are behind you. How’s the view from under the bus?

ICYMI: Politico 9/28 – Cruz sternly rebuked by GOP

On Monday night, Cruz’s colleagues ignored his attempt to disrupt Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s efforts to fund the government without attacking Planned Parenthood. In an unusual rebuke, even fellow Republicans denied him a “sufficient second” that would have allowed him a roll call vote.

Then, his Republican colleagues loudly bellowed “no” when Cruz sought a voice vote, a second repudiation that showed how little support Cruz has: Just one other GOP senator — Utah’s Mike Lee — joined with Cruz as he was overruled by McConnell and his deputies.

Life must be truly surreal for him these days. I mean: (more…)

Ben Carson: constitutional surgeon

This is what a clausectomy looks like

Ben Carson, perhaps the smartest of the GOP pack running for the nomination, and who has a book on the Constitution coming out a) doesn’t believe a Muslim should be president, and b) doesn’t appear to understand the Constitution.

Why is that?

Article VI, paragraph 3 of the Constitution states: “The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States [emphasis added].”

I’m not sure which is worse, a Constitutional scholar like Obama who appears to do end runs around it like a football player runs laps, or someone like Carson who thinks he knows the Constitution but isn’t willing to apply its principles in practice.

Carly Fiorina’s lie that wouldn’t die

Carly either can’t distinguish between evidence or doesn’t know what it is

Last Saturday I posted this on social media with my own comment:

If anyone has the footage she describes, please post. Otherwise, I’ll go with the existing evidence and conclude that this is just another pernicious lie.

Oprah Winfrey: one of the world’s best neoliberal capitalist thinkers | Television & radio | The Guardian

Beware the anesthetizing influence of Oprah.

Oprah Winfrey: one of the world’s best neoliberal capitalist thinkers | Television & radio | The Guardian.

“Oprah is appealing precisely because her stories hide the role of political, economic, and social structures. In doing so, they make the American Dream seem attainable. If we just fix ourselves, we can achieve our goals. For some people, the American dream is attainable, but to understand the chances for everyone, we need to look dispassionately at the factors that shape success.”

Democrats Embrace Citizens United in Defense of Clinton

Democrats Embrace Citizens United in Defense of Clinton.

Hill just loves her some big money in politics. And the party machinery that spent years on end crying foul about it before? Suddenly they just loves ’em some big money in politics.

I think Hill should just stick with a snappy one-liner that’s served her well so far.

“What difference – at this point, what difference does it make?”

In which Michael Goodman explains “what’s going on with Social Security?”

It’s a quick read, packs in lots of general history and concept, and seems to do a fair job of accomplishing its goal. Added bonus: comics are wonderfully shareable things.

If you don’t already know what’s going on, expect to have your blood pressure rise a bit. If you already know, you should probably still be mad.

If you know of any critical flaws in the argument as Goodman presents it, please let me know in the comments.
