All things considered, I think the children discussed in this article should be called refugees. What that should imply about policy at the border, I don’t know. But if you are fleeing your home country for your safety, that’s damned near the dictionary definition of refugee.
Whatever our policy needs to be, if it doesn’t consider this simple reality, it’s wrong. Wherever one derives their moral direction and strength, if that source of morals suggests it’s okay to add grief to the life of a scared child, there’s either something wrong with their source or with their way of interpreting it.
